Evaluating Term Limits Essay -- U.S. Government
Upon first examination, the idea of implementing term limits in Congress is appealing. In fact, the idea of term limits was initially discussed by our founders, though it was eventually decided that it should not be included in the Constitution (Newton-Small, 2010). The reasons for considering term limits have remained consistent since the beginning of the country, however, and include ensuring legislative turnover, limiting the abuse of the power of seniority, and decreasing the advantages given to incumbents in the campaign process. Interestingly, the states that have adopted term limits have not seen the expected positive outcomes, nor have the opponents seen the dire results that had been predicted. Upon further investigation, the case for term limits is strong as long as it is a nationally based initiative in order to create uniformity and the limits are long enough to increase competence in the job and head off short-term thinking, however without increased voter involveme nt, no reform will solve the current concerns with Congress. There are currently 15 states that have term limits in place for legislators, and among those states, there are seven different versions of term limits (National Conference for State Legislatures, 2009). The differences include the length of time for the limits and whether they are lifetime limits or just consecutive term limits. The difference in the parameters, and the fact that there has been no national reform passed, impacts the effectiveness of the restrictions. For example, consider the fact that congressional privilege and power is often based on seniority. States with current term limits have placed themselves in a weaker position when it comes to power within the legislature... ...tions.gmu.edu/Turnout_2008G.html Morrison, J. (1992). Hetrogenetiy of Problem Behavior in Male Adoloscents Essay
Often an incorrect interpretation or prognosis of an abnormal or extraordinary behavior pattern can draw the line between what is normal and acceptable, and what can suddenly be classified as a disorder or a disease. This paper aims to study the similarities between certain behaviors, and what factors can acts as differentiators between the two. The paper also emphasized how critical correct assessment is for correct prognosis, and that a treatment may thus, vary greatly from one disorder to another. Key concepts including ââ¬Å"delinquencyâ⬠, ââ¬Å"antisocial behaviourâ⬠, ââ¬Å"conduct disorderâ⬠, ââ¬Å"conduct problemsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"externalising behaviour disordersâ⬠are often used interchangeably, however these concepts are far from identical (Connor, 2004). These are different definitions from different perspectives of psychology such as juvenile justice, clinical diagnostic/medical settings, psychometrics, and personality/social psychology in order to have a more complete understanding of antisocial behaviour and other related behaviours (Connor, 2004). Disorders that bear similar symptoms Antisocial behaviors are any acts that violate social rules and the basic rights of others. They include conduct intended to injure people or damage property, illegal behavior, and defiance of generally accepted rules and authority, such as truancy from school. These antisocial behaviors exist along a severity continuum. Disruptive Behaviour Disorder is used to describe a set of externalizing negative behaviour that co-occur during childhood; and which are collectively known as: ââ¬Å"Attention-Deficit and Disruptive Behaviour Disordersâ⬠as outlined in the referred to collectively in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: Fourth Edition (DSM-IV). The following are three subgroups of externalizing behaviors: â⬠¢ Oppositional Defiant disorder (ODD) â⬠¢ Conduct Disorder (CD) â⬠¢ Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Conduct Disorder is aggression toward people and animals, destruction of property, deceitfulness, theft, and other serious social rule violations. Oppositional Defiant Disorder is characterized by negativistic, hostile, and defiant behaviors, such as losing oneââ¬â¢s temper, arguing, defying rules, deliberately annoying others, blaming others for oneââ¬â¢s behavior, and displaying anger or vindictiveness (Childhood Antisocial Behavior and Adolescent Alcohol Use Disorders). ADHD A mental disorder of childhood is at least three times as common in boys as in girls, characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity. Brief History of Disorder classification In the medieval times, any deviation from norm was dealt with contempt, and any extraordinary behavior shown by people were said to be possessed by an evil spirit. Later, following Darwinââ¬â¢s theory of human evolution, Morelââ¬â¢s idea of degeneration was used to explain criminal behaviour. According to this concept, criminals were less evolved than normal human beings and that all psychopaths exhibited some degree of criminal behaviour. Physician and phrenologist Carl Otto (1824) was the one who initiated the evolvement of the term psychopathy. Although his method was scientifically invalid, he started the trend of what would be called psychopathy as a set of personality traits. The term ââ¬Å"psychopathicâ⬠was first used by J. L. Koch (1891) to describe personality disorders as a result of biological causes. K. Birnbaum (1909) first used the term ââ¬Å"sociopathyâ⬠, because it was felt that environmental factors were causes of the personality. Now, psychopathy, as defined by Hareââ¬â¢s revised Psychopathy Checklist, is associated with both personality traits and overt behaviour. (Source: How Does Conduct Disorder correlate with Phsychopathy) What are the factors in the patientââ¬â¢s history that will help determine whether the adolescent has a certain disorder or he is simply ââ¬Å"acting out, and will eventually outgrow such behaviours Most of these disorders are generally and holistically classified as antisocial behavior. Antisocial behaviors tend to be consistent across social settings, such as school and home environments (Dishion et al. 1995). Although the inclination towards serious antisocial behaviors is quite steady across the lifespan, the manifestations of this propensity vary according to developmental stages. This concept has been termed ââ¬Å"heterotypic continuityâ⬠(Moffitt 1993, extracted from Childhood Antisocial Behavior and Adolescent Alcohol Use Disorders ). For example, antisocial behavior that is interpreted as irritability and impulsivity in younger children may become criminal behavior once these children reach adolescents or adulthood. Antisocial behaviour is a heterogeneous phenomenon and encompasses a wide variety of behaviours and definitions as mentioned above. One way to distinguish subtypes of antisocial behavior is from the developmental perspective where current classification system (APA, 1994; Lahey et al. , 1998) and developmental pathways (Hinshaw, Lahey, & Hart, 1993; Loeber, 1990; Moffitt, 1993; Nagin, Farrington, & Moffitt, 1995; Patterson, Capaldi, & Bank, 1991; Shaw, Bell, & Gilliom, 2000) feature two different subtypes of antisocial behaviour: child-onset (also early-starter, aggressive-versatile) and adolescent-onset (late-onset, non-aggressive). This paper focus on adolescent on-set behavior, from the perspective of developmental pathways. Despite the extent of information gathered on Psychopathy, little is known about its developmental nature. Presumable, there are certain risk factors or distinct developmental pathways which correlate them to other groups of delinquents. Knowledge of such developmental risk factors will greatly enable psychologists and researchers related to this field to deal with the serious problem of Psychopathy. Some risk factors of psychopathy include a history of abuse, parental antisocial characteristics and related factors. It is also widely believed that phsychpathy is manifested at a young age (Hare 1991, Hart and Hare 1997, extracted from Individual and Familial risk factors for Adolescent physchopathy). However this does not mean that psychopathy manifested in adulthood has been developing in an early age. Certain risk factors are identified in the assessment and prognosis of a disorder. Risk factors are generally associated with earlier events or conditions that are associated with a negative outcome which has been caused or influenced (McBride, Individual and Familial risk factors for Adolescent physchopathy 1998). This includes factors which act within the environment of the individual, and may be casually or indirectly linked to a negative outcome are also referred to as risk factors. Thus, serious assessment of anti-social behavior in an early and timely intervention may be able to mediate these risk factors. Loeber and Stothamer Lober (1996) indicate that these conditions are cumulative and may lead to ââ¬Ëstackingââ¬â¢, and may become resistant to change if not interrupted or mediated (Moffit 1990). It is important to understand that dynamic or changeable risk factors (such as knowledge about a childhood aggressive condition) are important in early identification of an adolescent disorder. Factors such as poor parenting or poor parental monitoring are important to be identified at an early age and thus can be monitored and treated, preventing it from becoming a an aggressive and adolescent delinquency in the future (Loeber and Stothamer Lober 1986). These factors are mutable through treatment, and prevents the accumulation of antisocial behavior in aggressive adolescents (Kazdin 1987). Twentieth century theorists report that parental care is a key characteristic in the development of child behavior. Theorists have suggested that poor family attitudes and interactions fail to provide the attachments that could leverage children into socialized life-styles (e. g. , Hirschi, 1969). Poor home environments manifest antisocial characteristics in their children and associate them with disengaging themselves from their environment (e.à g. , Sutherland and Cressey, 1974). Reports based on two adolescents studies have addressed this issue. Both studies have used data collected by the Youth in Transition project from adolescents at ages 15 and 17 years (Bachman and Oââ¬â¢Malley, 1984). Delinquency related to parent-adolescent interaction was studied by Liska and Reed (1985); their analyses suggest that attachment or interaction with parents inhibits delinquency, which in turn, promotes school attachment and stronger family ties. Wells and Rankin (1988) considered the effectiveness of various dimensions of direct control on delinquency; their analyses suggest that restrictiveness, but not harshness, inhibits delinquency, however these studies do have their limitations as they were made using the same database, but none of the same parameters to conclude the relationship between the variables (adolescent studies from Youth in Transition project extracted from Mc Cord Family Relationships, Juvenile Delinquency, And Adult Criminality). Many suggest that psychopathy disorders, such as antisocial behavior, are also genetically inherited (Hare 1993.à Forth and Burke 1998, Lykken 1995, (source: Individual and Familial risk factors for Adolescent physchopathy 1998). Parents who are psychopathic also behave violently towards their children, thus instilling seeds of similar behavior into them. Children who have displayed signs of aggressiveness also may not culminate into aggressive adolescents with disorders or psychopathy as suggested by studies done by White, Moffits, Earls, Robins and Silva, 1990 (Individual and Familial risk factors for Adolescent physchopathy 1998). Aggression in a proportion of boys emerges early in life and is usually accompanied by ODD symptoms (Loeber et al.à , 2000, extracted from Oppositional Defiant and Conduct Disorder: A Review of the Past 10 Years, Part I). DSM-IV prescribes that the diagnosis of CD should not be made when behaviors are in reaction to their immediate external environment or influences, an example would be of an aggressive adolescent living in a high-crime area (Oppositional Defiant and Conduct Disorder: A Review of the Past 10 Years, Part I). There is a consensus among delinquency studies of both official and self-report data, showing an increase from childhood through adolescence in the prevalence of nonaggressive CD behaviors (Achenbach et al.à , 1991; Stanger et al. , 1997); these include behaviors such as theft, breaking-and-entering, and fraud (e. g. , Loeber and Farrington, 1998; Loeber et al. , 1998a). More studies show that the prevalence of clandestine conduct problems increases from childhood through adolescence (Loeber and Stouthamer-Loeber, 1998). However, studies also give evidence that certain forms of aggression (such as physical aggression) has shown to decrease during the same period (Lahey et al. , 1998; Loeber and Hay, 1997; Loeber et al., 1991). However, more violent forms of aggression, such as robbery, rape, and attempted or completed homicide, tends to develop more during adolescence (Oppositional Defiant and Conduct Disorder: A Review of the Past 10 Years, Part I) What are the important factors that the clinician should assess? Often during clinical assessment, when investigation is conducted, external factors and information from parents and key influencers are extracted to determine the behavior of children and adolescents. It is, however, important to understand that children and youth in subject are essential informants regarding CD because their covert acts are not always noticed by adults. It is essential to combine the important informants diagnosis and results to establish the correct diagnosis and assessment, however much of this is missing. Even minor changes or difference in diagnostic criteria can produce large variations in prognosis leading to incorrect assessment and treatment of disorders. A comparison of DSM-1II and DS2v1-III-R diagnoses on the same sample showed that between DSM-III and DSM-III-R ODD became 25% less prevalent and CD became 44% less prevalent (Boyle et al. , 1996; Lahey et al. , 1990 extracted from: Oppositional Defiant and Conduct Disorder: A Review of the Past 10 Years, Part I). Diagnostic Assessment The assessment of Conduct Disorder, for example, requires collecting data from multiple informants, such as parents, teachers, colleagues, in different settings using varying methods over time, in order to develop more realistic assessment and information about the subject in question. Contact with medical, school, social service, and juvenille justice personnel should be established to obtain more realistic informationd . A history of the patient should be gathered including the patientââ¬â¢s prenatal and birth history, substance abuse by the mother, maternal infections, and medications taken during as well as post-pregnancy. The adolescentsââ¬â¢ history should cover problems of attachment, temperament, aggression, oppositional behavior, attention, and impulse control . Complete investigation of any physical and sexual abuse, both as a victim and perpetrator, should be dealt with in detail. DSM-IV target symptoms, and the course of their development, should be reviewed. The quality and quantity of peer relationships should be assessed . Obtaining information about the patientsââ¬â¢ performance at school is imperative. Data from intelligence testing, achievement test, academic performance, extra-curricular behavior, and interaction as well as other behavioral reports should be gathered and analyzed. Referral for intelligence testing, speech and language assessment, testing for learning disability, and neuro-psychiatric testing may further help in establishing relevancy of the diagnosis and further prognosis and assessment. Family assessment is an essential part of the evaluation and should include details of the familyââ¬â¢s stlye of coping and dealing with situations; socioeconomic status of the family as well as history of social and economic stressors, social support, rehabilitation etc should be obtained. How the parent has been dealing with adolescent, managing his behavior, and addressing the disorderââ¬â¢s relevance to the adoloscentsââ¬â¢ life should be investigated. Any sign of parentââ¬â¢s harshness towards the adoloscent, abuse/neglect, and any abnormal inconsistency should be noted. A history of family antisocial behaviors, including incarceration, violence and physical or sexual abuse of the patient or other family members should be investigated as all of these have effects on the adolescentsââ¬â¢ ultimate behavior and development. The family should be screened for any history of ADHD, CD, substance use disorders, specific developmental disorders (i. e. , learning disabilities), or any other personality disorders. Also included are any information on adoptions and placements in foster care and institutions and any behavior experienced there by the patient. An evidence of a physical evaluation specifically within the last twelve months is necessary for prognosis. Physical condition including pulse rate is useful or any medical history is important so that treatment can be planned accordingly. Other medical and neurological conditions, with especial focus on central nervous system (CNS) pathology (head injury, seizure disorder, or other CNS illness), chronic illnesses, etc should be evaluated. Any other relevant medical examinations should be conducted during the assessment. As mentioned above an interview with the patient, which can precede the parental interview, should cover the same aspects that are covered in the interview with the family; these include family history, the patientââ¬â¢s personal substance use and sexual history (including sexual abuse of others). DSM-IV target symptoms may be detected by interviewing parents and other informants, and perhaps not directly from the patientsââ¬â¢ interview. A close observation of the patientââ¬â¢s capacity for attachment, trust, and empathy; tolerance, anger and expression should be conducted during the interview; the patient might convey his/her capacity to show restraint, accept responsibility for actions, and experience of guilt. A close assessment of factors such as cognitive functioning; mood, affect, self-esteem, and suicidal potential; presence and quality of peer relationships (loner, popular, drug-, crime-, or gang-oriented friends); and disturbances of ideation (inappropriate reactions to the environment, paranoia, dissociative episodes) may be the factors which can differentiate the CD from other disorders .

Death of a Salesman: Discuss the importance of dreams in the play Essay
In Death of a Salesman, there are several types of dreams that are evident. These are the hopes and ambitions of the characters, daydreams fantasies and memories and national and cultural dreams, such as the American Dream. Dreams are a very important part of the play. They motivate the characters into their actions and explain their behaviour both in the past and the ââ¬Ëreal timeââ¬â¢ that the play is set in. The dreams also affect the way that the whole play is structured. The play is set in the time after the American Dream had started to fade. This is important, because Americans no longer believed in it. Willy found it hard to accept that his sons didnââ¬â¢t believe in what he had believed all his life. The American Dream affected all Americans when Willy Loman was younger, and even though Willy fell foul of the system, he was very much affected by it when he was a young man, and it is still with him. The American Dream was an ideal, which showed the longings of people who wanted to break new ground in a developing country, to earn and save their money and enjoy a comfortable lifestyle and to work for themselves. The important factors of the American Dream, were having the best of everything, being successful and popular, having money to spend, and the ideal of rural living close to nature, as well as owning your own business. Consumerism was very much linked to this. Advertising was being used for the very first time, on billboards, radio and even television. Mass production enabled wider availability, and salesmen were being used less and less as people bought on credit at nation-wide stores. Some people managed to be successful within this society. Others suffered from increased pressure to succeed and a feeling of inadequacy and disappointment if they were not earning enough and are therefore were unable to buy the best of everything. Capitalist society also led to people being laid off when they were no longer financially useful, as happens to Willy in the play. These are all very important ideas in Death of a Salesman. Willy suffers from the new society and gets angry when the fridge breaks repeatedly and he cannot afford to simply replace it. To Willy it is important that he has the best of everything and it is very important that he is successful and popular and he refers to this several times during the play. ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s liked, but heââ¬â¢s not well liked.â⬠Willy not only wants to be the best, he wants to be respected. His language tells us that he does not think very highly of the person that he is talking about. He is quite condescending. The recurrence of consumer goods in the play, such as the car and fridge, tell us that these things are of great importance to Willy, because they are part of his social standing. However, these things are not so important to Linda. She is more concerned about Willy and her sons. Material objects do not matter to her, she is too worried about Willyââ¬â¢s happiness. All the male characters in the play are affected by the American Dream and feel the pressure to succeed. Willy and Happy, particularly, strive towards something that would not necessarily ever make them happy in life. Biff questions the American Dream and seems to rebel against it. He wants a simple life, because he has seen what the American Dream has done to Willy and he has never settled into anything, because of this. He doesnââ¬â¢t want to end up like Willy. Biff defies the American Dream in this way, because he doesnââ¬â¢t want the objects that make up the lifestyle. The way of life around America generally, was very materialistic. People had to be seen to own everything. Each member of the Loman family has different hopes and ambitions, which have changed from the past into the present. Willy has a lot of hopes and ambitions, most of which are unrealistic and are in his imagination. He always had big plans for himself, and in one of his memories, we see him tell Happy and Biff his main ambition in life. ââ¬Å"Someday Iââ¬â¢ll have my own business, and Iââ¬â¢ll never have to leave home anymore.â⬠Willy is reassuring himself of his dream and that one day it will come true, rather than the boys. He talks of the future, and the use of the word ââ¬Å"somedayâ⬠instantly makes us feel that this is a dream. Willy wants to be the best and often expresses this in one of his dreams. ââ¬Å"Bigger than Uncle Charley.â⬠Charley seems to be the one person that Willy wants to beat and he is very competitive towards him. Towards the end of the play, Willy is still trying to reassure himself that he is the best. ââ¬Å"I am not a dime a dozen! I am Willy Loman.â⬠Willy still desperately wants to succeed and gain the respect of Biff. He uses an everyday phrase, and tries to reassure himself that he is not simply an everyday phrase or person. He is however, beginning to give up hope and it is sinking in that he is nothing special. Biff has very different dreams to Willy, because he is trying to break the mould that Willy has created for him. Biff did try to do what Willy wanted him to in the beginning, but he loses respect for Willy and his dreams change. ââ¬Å"I spent six or seven years after high school trying to work myself up.â⬠Biff did this for Willyââ¬â¢s sake, to prove himself to Willy. Biff talks in past tense, because he is no longer trying to build himself up, to prove himself to Willy. Biff feels now, that because he hasnââ¬â¢t done what was expected of him, he has wasted his life. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve always made a point of not wasting my life, and every time I come back here I know that all Iââ¬â¢ve done is to waste my life.â⬠Biff feels that he has wasted his life when he goes home, because Willy makes him feel this way, whereas, in reality, Biff hasnââ¬â¢t been able to settle down. Happy happily accepted the role that Willy created for him, because he was never very ambitious, and it suited him. Happy has been quite successful, and has many of the things he always wanted. However, he has found that not everything is as good as it seems when you donââ¬â¢t have it. ââ¬Å"But then, itââ¬â¢s what I always wanted. My own apartment, a car, and plenty of women. And still, goddammit, Iââ¬â¢m lonely.â⬠Happy has got what he wanted, but he realises that once you have everything you want itââ¬â¢s not the same, and if you donââ¬â¢t have some one to love, you get lonely. He realises that people are what matters, not objects, yet at the end, he moves away from this again. Happy swears, because he is trying to convey to Biff his point. Happy follows the American Dream and often thinks of him and Biff having a company of their own. ââ¬Å"The Loman Brothers, heh? â⬠¦ Thatââ¬â¢s what I dream about Biff.â⬠Happy wants his own business, as did Willy, but he wants it with Biff. He asks Biff a question, because he wants Biff to reassure him that his dream is the right dream. Linda Loman is a simple character, and is, above all else, loyal to Willy and his hopes and ideas. She desires only to be happy with what she has, and she wants Willy, Biff and Happy to be prosperous, content and pleased with what they have achieved. She has never fully understood Willy or her sons, and their desire for freedom away from the city bemuses her. She would like to be free from financial worry, and sees her life in the city, not anywhere else. Lindaââ¬â¢s role is to portray the typical American woman. She is faithful to her husband and stays at home to look after the family. She fits in with the American dream, which is shown in the play. The hopes and ambitions of the characters are not all very realistic. Linda is the realist in the family, and agrees with Willy to keep him happy. The characters all live their lives around their hopes and ambitions. They treat others as if they should have the same hopes and ambitions as them. Some of the dreams of the characters are very important to them, and this is because these dreams are the only way that they can escape their reality. They are unhappy, but these dreams make them happy. Biff significantly changes his dreams and ambitions over time. When he was young, he wanted to be like Willy and respected Willy a great deal. When Biff learns that he has flunked at school, he goes to see Willy, who is away on a business trip, and finds him with a young lady. This destroys Biffââ¬â¢s image of Willy as his mentor and loving father. Biff never recovers from this, and afterwards, rebels against Willy and all that he has been in Biffââ¬â¢s life. The other characters do not change their dreams as significantly. Happy realises that he is stuck in a dead end job, but he cannot escape, and does not wish to do so, because he is comfortable where he is. Linda still has her dreams although she no longer strives to achieve them, because she has realised that her sons now lead their own lives. Willy still wants to be the best, and finds it very hard to accept that he is growing too old for his job. At the end of the play, Willy commits suicide, and at his funeral, Biff says ââ¬Å"He had the wrong dreams. All, all, wrong.â⬠Biff assumes that Willy had the wrong dreams, whereas, Willy had the right intentions, he merely aimed too high. Biff is convinced that his dreams are the right way of life, and that Willy was selfish and living under an illusion. Biff uses the word ââ¬Å"wrong,â⬠which leads us into believing that Willyââ¬â¢s dreams were in fact wrong, although we know that Willy was just a victim of the American Dream. Dreams have a big impact on the structure of the play, as we see Willyââ¬â¢s dreams and memories acted out before us as if they were flashbacks in a film, they are indeed flashbacks in Willyââ¬â¢s life. Willy is sixty, and as he gets older, he remembers parts of his life in these flashbacks. He is reminiscing back to the past, wishing that he was still there. These flashbacks are cleverly used to explain ââ¬Ëpresentââ¬â¢ events, such as why Biff no longer respects Willy. The play centres on Willyââ¬â¢s dreams and fantasies. They are a very important aspect of the play, and because of this, we are warned when one is coming, because the play can be very difficult to understand without these warnings. All of the action takes place in Willyââ¬â¢s house and yard and in various parts he visits New York and Boston. There are only two acts and no scenes. Scenes are usually used to distinguish between dreams and reality, whereas in Death of a Salesman, Miller did not want this distinction. Whenever the action is in the present, the actors take note of the imaginary wall-lines, entering the house only through itââ¬â¢s door. But, in scenes of the past, these boundaries are broken, and the characters enter or leave by stepping ââ¬Ëthroughââ¬â¢ a wall on the forestage. When Willy is about to have a dream or fantasy, we are made aware of this, when a flute plays a melody. This is an ironic reference to Willyââ¬â¢s father, who played the flute and travelled the country, with his family in his wagon, selling flutes he made on the way. The light dims on the stage, and the dreams are accompanied by appropriate music, to help the audience to discover what frame of mind the dream is in. When Willy is with the woman, ââ¬Å"raw, sensuous musicâ⬠is playing in the background, to set the scene. The flashbacks that we see clarify what is happening in ââ¬Ëreal time.ââ¬â¢ Without them, we would be unsure of what is happening. The effect of seeing them is that instead of wondering what is going to happen next, we begin to wonder what has happened in the past to make the Loman family like they are. We particularly wonder this before we find out that Biff caught Willy with the woman. Before we see this flashback, we are very uncertain of what caused Biff to lose all respect for Willy, although we have an idea from conversations near the beginning of the play. Linda: ââ¬Å"It seems thereââ¬â¢s a womanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (she takes a breath as) Biff: (sharply but contained) ââ¬Å"What woman?â⬠Linda: (simultaneously) ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ and this womanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Biff is evidently very worried about Linda finding out about something, although at this stage, we are unsure what it is yet. Willy is getting older, and he really doesnââ¬â¢t want to. As he gets older, he reminisces back to the past, wishing it was still then. Willyââ¬â¢s flashbacks reveal to us how the characterââ¬â¢s relationships with each other have changed over time. We therefore see them differently in ââ¬Ëreal time,ââ¬â¢ because we see things that they have done, and it changes our perception of them. When we find out that Willy slept with a woman when he was on a business trip in Boston, we change our view of him. Before, we viewed him as lonely, getting old, and reminiscing about the old times. When we found out that he slept with the woman, we just see a man who is desperate to be successful, although he is too old to ever be successful. He slept with the woman to boost his sales, because he cannot accept that he will never be successful. Willy brought up his sons to believe that they were the best and that they could have anything that they ever wanted. Willyââ¬â¢s flashbacks mainly show the boys when they were younger, because Willy knew that they both respected him and looked up to him as their mentor in life. Biff and Happy are both very confident because Willy brought them up to believe in themselves. When Biff steals a football, in one of Willyââ¬â¢s dreams, Willy automatically jumps to his defence. Because of this attitude, Biff and Happy strive to be the best they can in life and are delusional about how successful they are to please Willy, although all of them know that they are misleading each other. In ââ¬Ëreal time,ââ¬â¢ Biff is trying to tell Willy that he went to jail when he was away for three months. Biff gets very angry, because he has realised that they cannot accept the truth, and he no longer wants to live his life as a lie. When we do see events that happened in the past, we have to bear in mind that we see them as Willy remembers them. Willy is getting quite old, and has been delusional for his life. Willy never saw events very accurately, because he always wants the best for himself and his sons. He distorts events and often exaggerates or completely invents them. In Willyââ¬â¢s first dream, everything seems to be ââ¬Ëperfectââ¬â¢ because Willy wants to think that his sons respected him and missed him when he went on business trips. He also recalls that he felt guilty, when he saw Linda mending stockings, because he cannot give her new ones, but he gave the woman that he slept with new ones. In Willyââ¬â¢s second dream, he is recollecting when Biff discovered him with the woman. He remembers this properly, because it was an awful thing to happen to him. He was shocked and distressed, which helped him to remember events correctly. Willy often remembers things as he would have liked them to happen. He wants to be the best, respected and successful. This is reflected in his dreams, because he remembers things as he wishes they had happened. Willy is still being delusional about his life, because he cannot accept the truth. Willy has trouble accepting that he wasnââ¬â¢t successful and does not have the chance to ever be successful, because he is too old, and his career is over. Dreams are important in the play for many different reasons. The dreams in the play convey different ideas about the characters. We see the characters in ââ¬Ëreal timeââ¬â¢ and can only truly understand them when we see past events. We see how the American Dream affects the characters, how their hopes and ambitions affect them and how past events affect them through flashbacks. Miller is trying to make a point that we live in a society that encourages us to have dreams that are well beyond our means, and are unachievable, rather than realistic dreams. All of the characters in the play have been affected by their dreams and the dreams of others. Without dreams, human life would be awful, because we all need something to aim for, but our aims need to be realistic. Arthur Miller has effectively shown how our dreams can get out of hand, and do the people around us, as well as ourselves, more damage than good. The American Dream affected one generation a lot, until it was seen by the next generation that it was merely an ideal. Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s father immigrated to America, and soon found that the land of opportunity was not all it seemed.

The Challenge of Starting Up A New Internet Venture
Lui and Wong had made a good choice in choosing music as there online start up business, because of the nature of music itself is information rich, easy to distribute, consumption experience are indifferent between digital or physical product, also, without the space limitation of a physical store, MusicJuice. net can provide a large amount of selection for user to choose. In addition, internet landscape empowers the business model of Crowd-Sourcing, where millions of vertical interest group can form their own communities, share and support each other on the internet. And such business model has proven to be very successful in Europe, theoretically, MusicJuice. net should also be successful in North America where the potential market size was approximately 240,000 musicians. However, the company has been losing money month after month since launched in April 2008, only 70 artistes has signed up in July 2008 and none of them had reached the fundraising goal, and of course, no premium m embers at all. The two co-founders have to decide what could be done to save MusicJuice. et or whether they should close the business for good. Before jumping into conclusion, letââ¬â¢s examine the situation with the 5 Forces analysis. First of all, the threats of new entrants are too high, just like their competitor ââ¬â Slicethepie. com was launched one month after MusicJuice. net began its development. Forming such music portal requires relatively low capital investment, and there is no customer or brand loyalty at all, because the users will only loyalty to the musicians. The threats of substitute products for MusicJuice. et is also very high, as people will enjoy and obtain the music they like in many different sources, CD Store, radio, youtube, iTunes, sharing between friends, or even download from piracy websites! Not only facing the threats of new entrants and substitute, what really bothers MusicJuice. net is the high bargaining power of supplier, i. e. the musicians . The business of MusicJuice. net is bet on the quality of their signed musicians, but what musicians really cares is to expand their fans network, but not to build any relationship with a particular platform.Even though the bargaining power of customers is comparatively low when the user addicted into any single musician, but such advantage is not sustainable once the musician switch to other platform. And the biggest force affecting MusicJuice. net is the high intensity of competitive rivalry, many companies including those major music labels and big IT corporations e. g. Microsoft also attempted to use MySpace to slice the pie of the profitable music industry, not to mention those giants like iTunes and Amazon.Even thought in such unfavorable situation, MusicJuice. net can still do something to rescue their business, not just working on marketing campaign or functional enhancement, but to focus on building the pure music community by forming strategic partners with indie band and independent music labels, line up with quality musicians to build few showcases of successful stories, aforementioned, their business is bet on the quality of their suppliers, they should provide a reason for the musicians to sign up on their platform. After all, people are looking for music as an enjoyment, not an investment, MusicJuice. net should provide more interesting free content for the user to enjoy music, but not just invest on music. Calvin Clain IMC Plan Essay
Executive Summary Calvin Klein Inc. formed in 1968 is typically associated with high quality apparel and intimate wear at a premium price, boasting strong brand equity and an extensive and global loyal consumer base. In 2003, CK was purchased by Philliphs-Van Heusen Corp (PVH), which now controls its operations. Calvin Klein has over time diversified into various business avenues, exploring the fragrances and sunglasses markets, which have assisted in generating business profitability, and fostering brand awareness and exposure. However, through gap analysis exploratory research, we have identified the menââ¬â¢s premium swimwear market as a potential market segment to penetrate. The proposal consists of developing a line of exclusive or limited edition menââ¬â¢s CK swimwear, made from the latest lycra fabric technology fostering increased support and comfort for consumers. The purpose of the following report is to outline a strategic integrated marketing communications plan considering the following elements; competitor & situational analysis, identification of target audience, defining campaign objectives, formulation of creative and communications strategy and evaluation of the campaign. Typically associated with a minimalistic (black and white) and controversial style of advertisement, our campaign seeks to maintain this specific brand image, whilst building brand equity. The ultimate objectives of the campaign include; increasing sales and profitability, generating exposure and awareness with potential customers and re-enforcing brand image and further building brand equity. These objectives may be achieved through developing creative and innovative marketing strategies and campaign, attracting the new target segment by diversifying into the swimwear market. The launch ofà the limited edition of swimwear is strategically timed to take place parallel with the beginning of summer 2013, thereby seeking to capture the large market demand for mens swimwear. Introduction Product Description The Limited Edition CK menââ¬â¢s swimwear range is to consist of several difference styles of swimwear trunks, made from the latest fabric and fiber technology therefore fostering increased comfort and support for consumers. The concept of a limited edition range, reinforces the exclusivity of the CK brand. In developing an exclusive range, consumer demand typically increases as it is considered as an special opportunity purchase. Calvin Klein have not yet diversified into the swimwear industry, thus our limited edition range can be considered a trial or market test to establishing a more permanent presence in the Australian swimwear industry. How our Product is different â⬠¢Incorporates the latest fabric (nylon) technology for swimwear; to foster increased comfort and support for consumers. Competitor brands such as AussieBum are already using this latest technology, therefore in manufacturing with this fabric CK is keeping up with industry innovations and developments. â⬠¢CK has not yet diversified into the swimwear market in Australia, venture will capture the market demand for quality premium swimwear â⬠¢CK will employ the latest print designs and patterns with assistance from fashion industry experts that will assist in distinguishing our product from our competitors. â⬠¢Prestige associated with purchasing the CK swimwear, in the fact it CK is predominantly a American brand therefore consumers may be more inclined to purchase based on this prestige and exclusivity factor Management Responsibility The creation and development of this product requires a subdivision or team to be established at CK Australia to monitor the establishment, development and execution of the manufacturing, delivery and marketing elements associated with the swimwear range. These individuals must be accustomed andà familiar with the CK brand, ensuring the core messages and themes remain constant throughout the marketing campaign and remain aligned with the CK brand image. Geographic Location & Length of the Campaign Our Summer Limited Edition campaign, based in Sydney, is targeted toward male consumers aged 18-30 who characteristically have a higher disposable income enabling them to purchase high quality premium swimwear. This campaign is based in Sydney due to the large population, climatic trends (hot summers) and the extensive demand for premium swimwear. The campaign is to run from the beginning of Spring 2013 , ensuring early exposure in that consumers know of the product before the summertime ââ¬Ërushââ¬â¢ for swimwear commences, and to run until the end of autumn; the end of summer 2014, therefore ensuring relevant mass exposure to the target audience. Situational Analysis Current Market Position Product Range & Distribution; Product, Price, Promotion and Place Calvin Klein currently has product offerings across itsââ¬â¢ Calvin Klein Jeans, Swimwear, Underwear and CK brands. The hierarchy starts with the CK designer underwear, and then there is Calvin Klein Jeans, which for Calvinââ¬â¢s casual lifestyle range. In among that you have CK One, which is the most youthful part of the brand and then thereââ¬â¢s CK Calvin Klein, which is slightly more formal for the edgy downtown girl and guy. On top of that is Calvin Klein Collection, which is at the apex of the pyramid. All of these use a premium pricing strategy, offering affordable luxury brand products with high quality and style. The distribution of Calvin Klein products reflects this exclusivity as depicted in Figure 1, with 982 Calvin Klein retail stores worldwide, consisting of 189 full price free-standing stores, 118 outlet free-standing stores, and 864 shop-in-shop/concession stores. Financial Performance It is crucial to review Calvin Kleinââ¬â¢s financial performance and current position in the marketplace in order to position or embark on product extension lines and ensure business growth and prosperity. Figure 2 represents the results of last yearââ¬â¢s financial performance, indicating the annual revenue to reach $1.1bn. Additionally, as indicated on Figure 3, Australian sales fall into the category of other at 2%, which is extremely low in contrast to the sales around the rest of the world. Therefore, in positioning the CK campaign in Australia, the CK brand is seeking to increase its presence in Australia and break into the domestic swim market. Figure 2 Figure 2 Company Analysis Company Structure According to a statement by Philliphs-Van Heusen Corp (PVH), Calvin Klein adopts a tiered strategy: ââ¬Å"In order to more efficiently and effectively exploit the development opportunities for each brand, a tiered-brand strategy was established to provide a focused, consistent approach to global brand growth and development. Each of the Calvin Klein brands occupies a distinct marketing identity and position that preserves the brandââ¬â¢s prestige and imageâ⬠Therefore, the internal structure of Calvin Klein is segmented or divided into subdivisions based on the different offerings, such as Calvin Klein Jeans and Calvin Klein fragrances. Within each subgroup are specialist individuals, with extensive industry experience, as well as other typical corporate roles, such as marketing and finance managers. It is ultimately due to the size and diversity of the CK brand that it is subdivided, however, across the various product avenues it maintains a prestige brand image. Top down management Calvin Klein is currently owned by Philliphs-Van Heusen Corp (PVH), which is comprised of Heritage Brands, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein. Currently PVH adopts the top down management approach that is the executives and board members elect the direction of the company and are responsible for making strategic decisions and strategies regarding the future of the business. Calvin Klein, currently based in North America, is headed by Paul T Murry, whom is ultimately responsible for the direction and strategic choices for the development and prosperity of CK. Competitive Analysis Calvin Kleinââ¬â¢s competitive analysis involves assessing the strength and weaknesses of current and potential competitors; including considering their resource profile (financial & supplier connections or relationship) and capabilities. Typically Calvin Klein operates in the luxury apparel retail market, and therefore their traditional and predominant competitor base consists of the following brands; Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Hugo Boss and Donna Karen. However, in the proposed swimwear market we have identified relevant competitors to include; Speedo Renown for style and performance, the Speedo brand was established in Sydney in 1914 and has grown to be the leading swimwear brand in Australia. Essentially this will be the largest competitor of the new CK limited edition swimwear range, due to the already established loyal customer base and extensive and stable market stare in the domestic market with industry reports indicating a 17 per cent rise in Australian sales and a 44 per cent worldwide during 2010. Currently Speedo offers various ranges or collections including; Competition and Racing swimwear, Board short and Swim Trunks, Fashion and Lifeguard. AussieBum Founded in Sydney in 2001, AussieBum manufacturers swimwear and underwear that are renown for its designs and comfort. AussieBum remains an industry leader in terms of using the latest fabric technologies to foster increased comfort and support for their consumers. Despite been manufactured in Sydney, the predominant target market for the AussieBum swimwear is inà European nations (due to the trunks instead of board short style). However, as they are based in Sydney and offers over 150 product lines at a premium price, AussieBum can therefore be considered a close competitor of the CK limited edition range. Budgy Smugglers Launched in 2004, the Budgy Smuggler brand is becoming an increasingly popular and well known brand. The 100% Australian made brand, are becoming increasingly famous with the bright bold colourful swimwear and the multiple charity events consumers are wearing the smugglers at such as BabeWatch. As they are Australian made and popular amongst the surfer culture, Budgy smugglers can be classified as a serious competitor to the CK swimwear range. Perceptual Map External Environment Technological Factors It is crucial for organisations to remain abreast of the latest technologies in order to remain competitive in the current business environment. Therefore, it is essential to consider technological developments surrounding both the marketing and advertising worlds as well as the swimwear industry. Technological innovations and developments in fabric and fibre technology (fostering comfort and support) as well as Computer Aided Design (CAD) offering new innovative prints and patterns combined with the new more efficient manufacturing techniques, make the fashion and in particular swimwear industry highly competitive. Therefore it is crucial that CK conducts extensive research and development on their swimwear line in order to gain an advantage over their respective competitors. Additionally, CK must acknowledge the new forms of marketing to include internet advertising and advertising through social media as society is becoming increasingly technologically dependent. Economic Factors The stability, stage of the life cycle and fluctuations in the economy areà all factors that significantly influence and impact upon consumer spending. If the economy is experiencing a downturn or decline, consumers are less likely to spend money on non-essential items and less likely to pay more for quality garments or swimwear. Therefore, as our target audience is projected to include those that have a higher discretionary income, CK must be aware and have an appropriate contingency plan in place if the state of the economy declines leaving sales heavily affected. Legal & Political Factors CK must also consider the legislation relevant to their business operations such as Trade Practices Act 1974 and Consumer Protection Act 2010, additionally legal considerations may include patents (for fabric innovation ideas), OH & S of manufacturing workplace facilities and employment legislation (including relationships with trade unions). Opportunity Analysis Expansion of the CK brand Calvin Klein has diversified into various and varied industry avenues, however they have not yet effectively penetrated the Australian swimwear market. From fragrances to lingerie and home wears, the CK brand has enjoyed success in multiple industries, however, we have identified the swimwear market in the Australian region as a crucial opportunity and profitable venture. Therefore, in the expansion or diversification of the CK brand into the swimwear market, the CK brand would ultimately be not only building its brand equity but also expanding their customer base and simultaneously generating healthy profits. Shift in social trends Society is becoming more accepting and supportive of the budgie smuggler style swimwear brief. There is an increasing trend and significant increase in men wearing the swim trunks. A recent online poll (on business day) indicates the budgie smuggler style of swimwear is at 53% popularity, therefore this confirms there is a market demand for the ââ¬Ëtrunkââ¬â¢ style of swimwear. *http://www.businessday.com.au/executive-style/style/return-of-the-budgie-smuggler-20101020-16u1n.html Industry Condition & Competitors The predominant competitors of the CK swimwear range would include; Speedo, Aussiebum, Budgie Smugglers and Billabong. However these are the main competitors, therefore it can be established the market is not heavily saturated. In reference to Porters 5 forces model, the barriers to entry in the Australian Swimwear market are relatively low, due to the limited competitive landscape. Therefore, in considering the above factors in the CK opportunity analysis, and with additional consideration of the perceptual map, it can be determined there is a gap in the market that the CK limited edition range can penetrate. Objectives Objectives provide guidelines for the marketing team to work towards and foster a sense of purpose for the campaign. Our aim with the overall marketing program is to generate product awareness, promote our limited edition swimwear through effective means and increase our market share. Since this special edition line is not yet in the market our objective is to create relatively high market share within the Sydney region over the period of the campaign. We are also looking to increase consumption in the wider Sydney area by using a varied marketing mix. Furthermore we intend to use extensive print advertisements (billboard, magazine & catalogue) to increase awareness heading into the summer season. There are several main objectives in the CK campaign: Marketing Objectives Retain the CK brand image and further build brand equity through the introduction or extension of CK brand into the swimwear market Sales Objectives Obtain 35% market share in the swimwear industry (based in the Sydney region) by the conclusion of the campaign Generate net profit of excess than $2million Develop campaign within budgeted limitations Communication Objectives Create awareness of CK limited edition range through effective advertising mechanisms, seeking to persuade consumers to purchase the CK product. Target Audience Market Segmentation Geographic Segmentation The market can be segmented according to geographic characteristics or criteria, such as our campaign is based in NSW and predominantly focused in Sydney. The large population and climatic conditions (hot summers) of Sydney make it an appropriate and suitable geographic region to focus our campaign toward. Demographic Segmentation Division of the market based on characteristics such as gender, income and age; male 18-30 with a moderate to high income. These demographic features enable CK, to develop a suitable product meeting consumer demands and design an effective marketing campaign to reach the projected audience. Psychographic Segmentation The underpinning marketing strategy the CK campaign will adopt, is predominantly based on appealing to the target markets sense of insecurity and desire to ââ¬Ëlook goodââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ësexyââ¬â¢ through purchasing and wearing the CK briefs. Factors to consider in this segmentation include; lifestyle, personality characteristics, social class and values. Essentially, the typical CK consumer would enjoy a luxurious lifestyle in the middle to high social class range and additionally personality traits may include; fashion conscious as well as desire to be socially accepted. Target Market Primary Audience Our target audience consists of males aged 18-30 in the Sydney region, with typically a higher disposable income (to purchase the trunks at RRP $129.95). Through market segmentation, we have identified this segment of the market to be our projected audience, and from this we are able to develop a effective marketing campaign to reach and persuade consumers. Secondary Audience Our secondary target audience, is the respective partners and mothers (girlfriends & mothers) of the males age 18-30. Therefore, we have incorporated into our marketing strategy, print advertisements in womenââ¬â¢s magazines. Women are the positioned target market to purchase the product as a gift or present for their partners. Positioning Ultimately, this refers to the process of establishing an image, identity or stigma in the minds of the consumers that they associate with the brand. The Calvin Klein brand has an existing brand identify in the minds of consumers, in that typically it is viewed as a ââ¬Ësexyââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ësultryââ¬â¢ and an enticing brand. Therefore, for the extension into the swimwear industry we are ultimately seeking to maintain this positioning in the minds of the consumer. Communications Strategy Message The purpose of the campaign is to generate brand exposure and generate awareness and stimulate demand for the new range of limited edition swimwear. Ultimately, the campaign is maintaining the typical elements of CK marketing in its minimalistic, black and white and controversial style to align with the overall CK brand image. The objective of the campaign is to generate a sense of exclusivity and ââ¬Ëwantââ¬â¢ for the CK swimwear range, through positioning of the advertisements and promotional activities it is seeking to attract the young male target audience who have interest or concern with appearance and comfort of their swimwear. Typically, CKà advertisements are considered ââ¬Ëprovocativeââ¬â¢ and feature attractive, muscular male models which appeal on a social level to the target audiences sense of esteem and confidence. Therefore, through using attractive and famous public figures, such as the Stenmark twins and celebrity endorsements, consumers will believe if they purchase the swimwear they will too look as ââ¬Ëattractiveââ¬â¢ as those that appear in the advertisement. Source Ultimately, Calvin Klein is the source or sender of the information to their respective intended receiver. In using a celebrity or model endorsement (Stenmark twins), it is crucial to ensure the consumer perspectives and associations of the source as positive and align with the brand image. The ultimate objective or goal of the source or sender is to encode the message in a succinct and effective manner so that the target audience or receiver is able to understand and comprehend the key message. Channel A communications channel refers to the medium through which the message is communicated to the target audience or the receiver. Typically, Calvin Klein campaigns adopt a ââ¬Ënon personalââ¬â¢ channel of communication that is the message is carried to the receiver without interpersonal contact from the sender. An example of this would include the Calvin Klein billboards, which are advertised to a mass audience. Additionally, the CK campaign would incorporate personal channels of communication, which includes direct contact with the target audience. Personal channels, such as the proposed pop-up shows and demonstrations, assist in both brand exposure and the development of rapport with the public and the respective target audience. Therefore, through adopting both forms of communication channels (personal and non-personal) Calvin Klein seeks to maximize brand exposure and effectively communicate the intended message to the target audience. Receiver Essentially, the receiver refers to the audience or individuals exposed to the message. Typically, the intended receiver is the target audience; males aged 18-30 in the middle to high-end income segment and living in Sydney.à The role of the receiver is to decode the key messages, for example the CK swimwear makes you look and feel sexy and confident, in the communication material, and process them forming an informed opinion or thought. Feedback The response or reaction to the exposure to the message can indicate the effectiveness of the campaign or advertisement in reaching and communicating with the target audience. Therefore, it is essential to conduct a follow up study (focus group) or assessment to gather an understanding of the effectiveness of the advertisement and identify the areas development or improvement. Creative Strategy Essentially, the purpose of the proposed creative strategy is to obtain consumer attention and mass exposure and to encourage or provoke consumers to purchase the CK swimwear range. Inline with the simplistic style and themes (for example black and white) of previous campaigns, the proposed advertisement will too incorporate the typical elements found in CK promotions, thus ensuring a consistent brand image. Currently, CK has excellent consumer brand recognition thus in maintaining the typical CK marketing theme consumers are able to more easily identify the brand. Ultimately, the creative strategy is a crucial element of the IMC plan, as it outlines the predominant message and purpose of the advertisement and assists in determining the brand positioning; that is how consumers perceive the CK product. Advertising Problem or Issue The predominant problem or issue is how to effectively reach, connect and prompt or encourage the target audience to purchase the CK swimwear. Advertising and Communication Objectives â⬠¢Generate greater brand awareness and brand equity; informing consumers of the new CK swimwear range (notifying the general population that the CK brand has diversified into menââ¬â¢s swimwear) whilst simultaneously gaining consumer attention (that of the public and target market) â⬠¢Maintain brand image; achieved through utilizing the same CK theme of the attractive model, black and white photo on billboards across the Sydney region and print advertisements â⬠¢Persuade target audience to purchase product; through specific marketing tactics, such as adopting designs to appeal to the consumers affective functions or conscious, the campaign seeks to prompt or encourage consumers to purchase the swimwear. Target Audience As previously outlined, the target audience is the select group of customers to aim the marketing efforts toward, in respect to the CK campaign our target market is males 18-30 living in Sydney. The simplicity of the campaign is designed based on characteristics of the target market, which is the tendency for males of the 18-30-age bracket to not read or absorb large amounts of information in advertisements. Therefore, as males tend to simply view an image, through the affective advertising approach, the campaign may prompt them to purchase the product as it appeals to social based feelings of acceptance and esteem. Additionally, in utilizing attractive models and simplistic campaigns this also attracts the target markets respective partners, females. Females are motivated by the image of an attractive man in trunks, and may purchase the product in hope their man can look like the model. Major Selling Idea or Key Benefits In adopting the affective appeals approach, the campaign seeks to indirectly influence or play on the consumers sense of security, acceptance and esteem (socially based appeals) prompting them to purchase the swimwear in order to ââ¬Ëfeel and look goodââ¬â¢. It is crucial to consider ââ¬Ëthe promiseââ¬â¢ or benefit the advertisement is going to give the consumer, for example the CK suggests men who buy the swimwear range to look attractive, sexy and sultry which in-turn may attract females. Therefore it is inn appealing to the target audienceââ¬â¢s sense of security and acceptance, the campaign encourages males to purchase the swimwear. Creative Strategy Statement (Theme appeal and execution techniques) â⬠¢Theme appeal; It is important the campaigns theme remains consistent with pastà marketing efforts, as it fosters brand consistency and brand recognition. Therefore, using black and white billboard advertisements with attractive males models is an essential part of the campaign to launch the new swimwear range. Supporting Information and Requirements â⬠¢Ad Layout; in relation to the composition of the billboard and magazine layouts, it is crucial to have a visual element and the CK logo present and easily identifiable. Essentially, the logo and brand name must be present and easily visible enabling consumers quick and easy brand recognition. Additionally, the image must for fill the brief of being sultry and sexy thus appealing to the target audiences social based feelings. Sample billboard and magazine layouts may be found in the media planning section below. Budget Proposed Budgeting and Forecasting Media Planning Essentially, the purpose of the proposed creative strategy is to obtain consumer attention and mass exposure and to encourage or provoke consumers to purchase the CK swimwear. It is crucial to consider ââ¬Ëwhenââ¬â¢ the promotional activities are run to ensure the effectiveness of the campaign. The CK campaign will begin with a ââ¬Ëbangââ¬â¢ and launch with all advertising mediums in place to generate initial mass exposure and attention. Gradually as the campaign proceeds, CK will alternate which magazines it advertises in to achieve greatest market coverage. Additionally, the billboards will run through the entirety of the campaign, as despite their cost, they act as an effective reminder for consumers and are thus a vital aspect of our strategy. Our media campaign will involve several different types of advertising within the media mix, with media coverage focused on ensuring that Sydney males aged 18-30 receive the most media emphasis. Develop media Mix â⬠¢Catalogue â⬠¢Magazine print advertisement â⬠¢Billboard â⬠¢Point of purchase displays *refer to media strategy for in-depth review Geographic Location Our advertising activities will extend from the throughout the Sydney region. However our main advertisements will be based around the beaches close to Sydneyââ¬â¢s CBD. The Eastern Suburbs (bondi), Northern Suburbs and Northern beaches will be our primary locations for advertisements. Scheduling We are using the flighting method of scheduling here due to the specificity of our product line. We are only looking to advertise when our target market is interested in swimming (Summer & Spring) and therefore flighting is the best method in order to reduce wastage. Our target market is around 30% of Sydneyââ¬â¢s population. Therefore, in order to increase awareness and raise sales levels we are only looking to reach 80% of our target market with our advertising message. On average we would like this 80% to view this message at least 3 times. By exposing large numbers of the target market we can ensure first year sales are high and we can maximise our profit. By placing our ads in highly populated areas we can certainly ensure that our target market is being reached effectively. â⬠¢Reach; Marketing mix ensures exposure to the general public and the target audience, essentially they are exposed to the CK campaign through various mediums. â⬠¢Frequency: Maintained billboard advertisements ensure constant exposure to both the public and the target audience. The frequency of the magazine advertisements also contributes to acting as a reminder mechanism for consumers to begin the decision making process, that is reminding them of the CK swimwear range and prompting them to purchase Creative aspects and mood Our marketing mix has been chosen specifically to ensure that the vehicles that portray our advertising message are creative whilst almost ensuring to enhance the mood of the target market. By using billboards and magazine advertising we can ensure that our message is evoked positively to the consumer. These media vehicles allow us to ensure that we gain interest in our product and increase the chances of the target market purchasing our product. Flexibility In order to achieve our company goals, there is a need to be flexible. Certain aspects of our media plan are more flexible then others. The most flexible promotion activity in the campaign, would be the distribution of the CK catalogues; this is due to the initial testing of the receptivity and consumer response. For example, if the catalogues receive a positive response, that is numerous consumers are taking and viewing them, essentially CK campaign manager should organise for more to be printed and distributed (template is already existing). Budget considerations Our budget magazine advertising is around $450,000 per year so to ensure we effectively use this media vehicle, we would place the advertisements in magazine that are read by our target market. In particular menââ¬â¢s health, which is read widely by 18-30 year old males who enjoy looking and feeling healthy. The CPM of Menââ¬â¢s Health is $145, however this doesnââ¬â¢t represent our target market effectively so we are only using magazine advertisements from September to February in order to avoid wastage. The billboard advertising creates difficulties in effectively reaching our target market, howeverà since our budget is around $200,000 we can afford to place these in three distinct and separate places. The Sydney CBD and Bondi are heavily populated by our target market, whether they live there or work there, by placing our billboards in these specific places we effectively use our budget and achieve our marketing objectives. Sample Billboard and Magazine Design The layout of both the image is designed to be the two Stenmark brothers posing in the CK swimwear (positioned toward the right of the advertisement; billboard and magazine), printed in black and white, with minimalistic writing positioned on the left ensuring the viewers eye reads the message then views the associated image; Sample billboard/magazine ad Media Strategy Media strategy takes into consideration the various tools of the IMC mix in recognition of achieving an organisations media objectives (Belch et al, 2012). Through the use of such disciplines as advertising, direct marketing, internet, interactive media, sales promotions, public relations, publicity and personal selling Calvin Klein will strive towards achieving their objectives with their new product line. Advertising; Print Media Magazines Calvin Klein summer 2013-14 campaign will include double paged spreads in various mens magazines (positioned in the opening pages of the magazines to capture the attention of the readers), including; Mens Health, Ralph, Gear and GQ. The advertisement, despite the high cost, is effective in reaching the target audience and prompting them to purchase the swimwear. The layout of the magazine advertisement will mirror the billboard campaign, the minimalistic black and white image featuring the Stenmark brothers. The advantages of a double page spread include the enhanced consumer receptivity and engagement (as the prominence of the ad ensures consumer attention) and secondly the prestige and permanence associated with print media. The second approach includes print advertisements in womenââ¬â¢s magazines such as; Cosmopolitan, Grazia and SHOP. In having a print advertisement in womens magazines, the intention is to capture and persuade the female audience to purchase the swimwear for their boyfriends or partners. The main image of the print advertisement will change monthly to avoid the ââ¬Ëwear out affectââ¬â¢, that is it will be slightly changed (the swimwear and the pose). Billboards Various billboards featuring the CK limited edition range will be featured around the Sydney region (CBD and bondi). The billboards will mirror the magazine print advertisements (fostering consistency), featuring the Stenmark brothers wearing the limited edition swimwear range. The advantages of using billboards include; maximum exposure to both the public and the target audience (in hope of walk by awareness). Direct Marketing Catalogue The limited edition range will develop a catalogue, directly sent to consumers in the CK database, informing them of the new product line. Internal stakeholders include the staff, management, owners, and shareholders. Staff and management devote time working for the company in order to earn a source of livelihood. Shareholders provide the company with capital of expansion while anticipating an increased a higher value of their shares as the company continues to make profits. On the other hand, it has stakeholders from the external front who include customers, s uppliers, competitors or substitutes and the public. The customers play a very crucial role as stakeholders. Strategic Marketing Case Study Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Strategic Marketing Case Study - Essay Example However, at this stage, other brands, especially those from overseas countries, are in a comfortable position in the market, thereby, posing a challenge to them. Thus, it appears that the time is ripe for the company to transform its product to meet the needs of the market. Obesity is a central focus for countries across the globe as a major public health concern in the present day and, therefore, shifting their market orientation to low-carbohydrate from premium is likely to benefit Fosters to a great extent in attaining higher market share for their product. Earlier when they marketed Pure Blonde, Fosters have focused on the premium quality of the product because the need of the hour has been answering the quest of a specific segment of consumers that have suddenly attained economic prosperity. What this segment has craved at that time has been a product that meets their distinct identity as a class of its own. Fosters have quickly recognized and responded to this expectation. Howe ver, at this stage, when other brands are commanding a better position with the premium concept, Pure Blonde needs to attract more customers by projecting their advantage as a low-carbohydrate product. This will definitely draw more people to consume their product and they can enhance their market share by deploying this strategy. On the other hand, this will preclude them from being considered as a brand focused on premium quality, which may entail the loss of some loyal customers. However, by the end of the day what matters is expanding the customer base and, in this context, an orientation towards the low carbohydrate aspect is a better option for the company to increase their sales. Discussion Question 2: Customer Profile for Female Consumers of Pure Blonde in 2013: Falls within the age group of 20 ââ¬â 40 years Employed in good position and/or upwardly mobile family Cares ardently for appearances and remains obsessed with fat, sugar and carbohydrate contents of food intake Considers herself as part of the class with the right perspectives Will remain on a diet and conscientiously checks carbohydrate content in food and beverages Will rather avoid a ââ¬Ëriskyââ¬â¢ beer than enjoying it for other attributes and happily forgo a beer to save calories Will socialize with friends as well as spend time in bars, pubs or restaurants Consumes alcohol at home, with friends during lunch or dinner In the present day, the females go to extent in their bid to reduce body weight and attain slimness. Therefore, the primary concern of this segment of customers is the low carbohydrate content and they will definitely expect the product to be of a high quality. The product already enjoys a reputation for its quality and unique taste. However, it will have to add some feature that will be attractive to females and promote this aspect. Discussion Question 3: Pure Blondeââ¬â¢s previous success has come from the fact that they recognized the market potential at that time and modulated their product according to the market needs. Similarly, they have do rethink their strategy now and modify the product accordingly. The current marketing strategy of the company needs to focus on the productââ¬â¢s appeal as a low carbohydrate beer. Therefore, I would suggest the marketing director to align future marketing campaigns
